July 29th, 2011 I'm super excited to be going to Shambhala Music Festival - I'm going to be working with PLASTIKWRAP to sell beautiful treasures, play dress up, and help make their space exciting and friendly. I've made some recycled leather rings and feather earrings (with feathers from family who live in da woods! Wild Turkeys, blue jays & blue black grackles. They're pretty special). The most exciting thing for me, is that Ryan from PlastikWrap has also set up a gorgeous, crescent-moon shaped video projection screen, so we'll be playing with video & light together over the weekend. Here is a photo of a process-based "Children's Peace Mural" that we did together. Through this mural experience, we explored our relationship with peace and the planet. We painted our ideas in words, pictures, and colours on a mural to put these ideas out into the world in an art-based form of wish or prayer.

This fall, I had the pleasure of teaching visual art workshops at the Ministry of Education's Student Voice forums at the Ontario Educational Leadership Centre (OELC) in Longford Mills, Ontario. I designed and facilitated workshops for students in grades 7 - 12 that explored the intersection of visual art and environmental education. I also facilitated Leadership Development sessions and worked with top educators who are leaders in their fields from across Ontario.

I was involved in coordinating and making art for an inspiring initiative at OISE. Please read what the University of Toronto has to say about the event: "Several Teacher Candidates from the Inner City Option won the OISE Commendation Award for Community Involvement, for helping to organize the First Annual Empty Bowls event at OISE. The Empty Bowl event integrated elements of the arts in connection with community agencies, students in the Toronto District School Board, teacher candidates, and the broader OISE community to raise funds for Sistering, and organization that supports women and children in need. The event brought together the OISE community for a communal luncheon, which featured crock-pots full of donated homemade soup and bread, and an open mic session for entertainment. Through the sale of over 1000 handmade clay bowls (made by teacher candidates in the OISE art class, and with TDSB students in their practicum placements), this group raised over $1200 to support the meal program at Sistering. This is a great example of the intersection between school, community, and social justice activism." Much thanks to Hilary Inwood, TDSB students, and my OISE coleagues for making this event happen.

Thursday March 5th, 2009 "SISTER 2 SISTER - Young Womyn Raising Their Voice" I was part of a coordinating committee for an innovative forum for young women in Grade 8 from four public schools in Regent Park, a high-needs area of Toronto. On the day of the forum, I will be facilitating a workshop with one of my fellow OISE Teacher Candidates, Keenan Way. We're planning a media literacy / art-making workshop called "BUSTING OUT", which critically examins the notions of beauty that surround us every day. Through dialogue and art making, we will deconstruct our ideas of what it means to be beautiful. |

A new exhibit space METAGALLERY is opening in the distillery district here in Toronto - and their focus is on Visionary Art - and their first exhibit, "MAPMAKERS", features some fantastic international artists like Alex Grey, Allison Grey, Andrew Jones, and Luke Brown. Sumkidz and I are very proud to be hosting the official after party for the Gallery Opening.
